17º FICS
15-19 MAY 2024
A LOCAL FESTIVAL FOR OUR WORLD
Cinema, witness and memory of the 20th century, is a free body in constant dialogue with the desire for freedom, creation, and innovation, and has always been an important point of imagination for possible futures. The relationship between human beings and their environment is one of the important themes of our time and runs through many of the gestures we see on the big screen since the dawn of the seventh art.
The Santarém International Film Festival (FICS) was born in 1971, the result of the desire of several film lovers to bring the best national and international films to the city, giving an important and necessary impulse to the cultural life of the region. Until 1989, FICS presented a program of works of great artistic quality that explored the agricultural, rural, and environmental themes.
More than thirty years later and now in the 21st century, we live in a moment of profound environmental crisis on a global scale. FICS emerges again with a new breath, but maintaining the initial matrix, continuing to build a space for dialogue between farmers, researchers, environmentalists, scientists, filmmakers and artists.
FICS thus aims to be a Festival that takes responsibility for environmental, economic and social issues, doing its part to help future generations have a place to live (and watch films). We want to bring transformative energy to the city of Santarém, by decentralizing access to culture, by participatory citizenship, by education through art and in community, by ecological sustainability and by valuing the territory.
